Asian Breast Augmentation Surgery:

Special Considerations & Special Techniques Are Extremely Important!

Many Asian women would prefer their breasts to be larger but understandably are afraid that:
  1.  they will end up looking disproportionately too big and therefore 'fake'; and
  2. have conspicuous brown scars on or under each breast!
The reasons for these quite valid concerns among Asian women come about because:
  • Some breast augmentation surgeons approach Asian breast augmentation in the same way they do for Western women. They fail to take into account the generally smaller height and physical proportions of Asian women and accordingly the need to consider smaller implants than those used in Western women.
  • Unfortunately, Asian skin  has a tendency to heal with permanently pigmented, brown scars.  Therefore,  the breast augmentation surgeon must consider placing the incisions in locations which, if they do end up pigmented, are not conspicuous and spoil the appearance of an otherwise attractive breast augmentation.
  • Dr Mayson believes that in order to create beautiful, natural-looking breasts for Asian women special considerations and special techniques in terms of implant size and location of the final scars are essential in order to avoid the above two outcomes.

    Size Considerations
Any Asian woman considering breast augmentation should bear in mind that, in general, Asian women have different physical attributes  to Western women. They tend to have smaller frames and more petite figures with A, less than A, and A-B sized breasts being more common.  Compared to Western women, naturally-occurring C-cup sized breasts are quite uncommon.

Therefore, if the average Asian woman is to have implants inserted that will make her look attractive and feminine yet still natural, Dr Mayson believes that she should consider smaller rather than larger implant sizes compared to Western women.  Naturally, the most appropriate size for any given woman will depend on her physical measurements as well as the pre-operative volume of breast tissue.  However, the objective of the surgery should still be the same – to make the woman look and feel attractive and feminine but not in any way disproportionately large and fake!

    Location of Incisions
It is a known fact that when Asian or brown skin is cut there is a significant risk of the final surgical scars being permanently pigmented and brown.

Disappointingly, some surgeons accept this risk of brown scars as an inevitable consequence of breast augmentation in Asians and persist in placing the incisions under the breasts where brown scars would mar the final appearance.  Even locating the incisions on the edge of the areola (the pigmented circle around the nipple) can still leave brown scars on the breast that would be a conspicuous tell-tale sign that you have had a breast augmentation.

In contrast, Dr Mayson believes that to create a beautiful breast and then have that appearance marred by an otherwise avoidable brown scar under, or anywhere on the breast, detracts significantly from the final result and to a large extent defeats the original aim of creating a beautiful and attractive breast.

Some surgeons, in an attempt to avoid such conspicuous scars on or under the breast in women with Asian or brown skin recommend:

    (i) a tiny incision at the base of the nipple; OR

(ii) a Trans-Umbilical Approach (through the navel)

Apart from their other drawbacks, the main disadvantage of the latter two methods is that they are suitable only for saline implants.  And, in our experience, most women prefer the more natural ‘feel’ of silicone gel implants over saline implants. So, unless you specifically want saline implants, the latter two techniques are not an option for you.

Similarly, the Peri-Areolar incision (around the edge of the pigmented circle around the nipple) also has its drawbacks for Asian women in that only saline or very small gel implants can be inserted and you still have the potential risk of a conspicuous brown scar on the breast!

Accordingly, Dr Mayson’s preferred special technique for Asian women is to locate the incision along a natural skin crease in the hair-bearing area of the armpit.  This is known as the Trans-Axillary approach.  Scars in this location, even in Asian women, tend to be very fine and even if they do end up pigmented are hidden in a natural skin crease.

In this way, there is NO SCAR to be seen anywhere on the breast, under the breast or around the areola (the pigmented circle around the nipple).

    Final Recommendations
If you are Asian and aspire to having beautiful, natural-looking breasts without any tell-tale scars anywhere on or under the breast consider Dr Mayson’s Trans-Axillary technique using an appropriate implant size that will create an attractive and very natural look for you.
