How Is It Done?
Breast Augmentation is usually performed under General Anaesthesia. However, it can also be done under Intravenous (‘Twilight’) Sedation with Local Anaesthesia. You can discuss this choice with your Specialist Anaesthetist on the morning of surgery. In either case, in the best interests of patient comfort and safety all Breast Augmentations are performed in a fully-accredited Day Surgery Hospital.
As regards the surgical technique, a solution containing adrenaline to minimise bleeding is first infiltrated into the area where the implant pocket is to be created. Then, through an incision in the skin Dr Mayson carefully creates the pocket for your implant. Understandably, the dimensions and exact position of this pocket are critical if the implant is to sit correctly under your existing breast and produce as natural a look as possible.
After creating the pocket, Dr Mayson inserts the implant of your choice. This is all then repeated on the other side. After a final check for symmetry from different angles and any necessary adjustments, the incisions are sutured.
The incisions are covered with a light dressing. The whole procedure normally takes around two hours. After a further two hours in Recovery you can go home. However, please note that you cannot go home alone. You must arrange for a responsible person to escort you home and be with you for the next 24 hours.
Sutures are removed 7-9 days later. If you are from out-of-town and cannot return to Dr Mayson to have your sutures removed, we can arrange for your local doctor to remove them. Dr Mayson will discuss these options with you.
Depending on your type of work, most patients are able to return to work within two weeks but you must avoid strenuous physical activities and contact sports for at least the first 3 months. You must also wear a specific type of bra, not an ‘under-wire’ bra, during those first 3 months. Dr Mayson will provide you with detailed pre-and post-operative instruction brochures once you have decided to proceed with the surgery.
